| RESEARCH ACTIVITIES |
| AIDMI focuses on research in order to guide ongoing as well as future work on school safety among various stakeholders. Learning from research is shared with concerned stakeholders through publications. Examples include the review of AIDMI's school safety training and a survey of teachers' perceptions of school safety. |

| SCHOOL SAFETY AUDIT |
| So far, an audit of 175 schools located in 8 states/Union Territory of India has made key recommendations for policy makers and practitioners. It also contains a school action plan for safety. |

| POLICY ADVOCACY |
| The campaign conducts workshops and round tables on matters related to child rights, education and school safety to generate new ideas. Such initiatives were made successful with the presence and contributions from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), concerned education department officials, I/NGOs working for children and schools, educational institutes, academics and UN agencies. A round table was organised at New Delhi in July 15, 2011. The Roundtable was attended by 15 participants including NDMA, BSDMA, UNICEF, leading civil society organisations in India, bilateral organization representatives and the corporate sector. |

| STRUCTURAL MITIGATION MEASURES |
| 34 schools in tsunami-affected coastal Tamil Nadu, school/education centers from flood-affected Bihar and Jammu & Kashmir have been given support for uninterrupted and safer education in schools through a number of mitigation measures, such as electrifying the school, providing a drinking water resource, building a sanitation facility, kitchen repairing, school/classroom repairing, and monsoon preparedness. |

| KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT |
| Laminated awareness posters with visual pictures and easy local languages (English, Gujarati, Hindi, Tamil, Urdu and Burmese). A set of total 32 posters have been developed with content on school safety and emergency medical responses for teachers to use as a ready reference to foster DRR education among children. Different types of publications have been developed and they nowreach out to nearly 900 schools located in disaster-prone areas of India and beyond. |

| SCHOOL SAFETY KIT |
The school safety kit of the campaign was initiated based on action learning experiences with the schools located in disaster-affected areas. The Campaign’s work in implementing activities revealed a significant lack of DRR awareness among schools throughout the region. Teachers also expressed interest in learning about DRR, but there was a lack of access to DRR and school safety materials in schools located in poor localities, thus contributing to their vulnerability.
The kit includes various types of Information Education Communication (IEC) tools for teachers to spread DRR and school safety education. The content of the kit covers diverse range of issues including, but not limited to, emergency medical responses, evacuation procedures, scientific insights into disasters, mental health issues, girls’ vulnerability, climate change, manual on school safety, and display sets on different aspects of school safety. |

| STUDENT SAFETY INSURANCE |
| The campaign has developed a unique insurance policy for school children, teachers and other school staff members that cover their risks not during school hours but throughout day and night i.e. for 24 hours every day of the year. This insurance policy is designed specifically for schools and education centers attended by marginalised children, including girls whose guardians cannot afford cost of treatment when these children suffer injuries in emergencies. From 2006 till October 2011, more than 42,000 students and school staff across 200 schools of 5 states/union territories are insured under this insurance policy. |

| FIRE EXTINGUISHER DEMONSTRATION AND INSTALLATION |
| So far the campaign has installed 390 fire extinguishers in 84 highly vulnerable schools and education centers in Bihar, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir and Tamil Nadu. More than 25,000 students and 750 school teachers and staff now have the knowledge, skills and confidence to operate fire extinguishers if need arises. |

| EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONSE AND FIRST AID KITS |
| Over 500 teachers and high school students are trained in Emergency Medical Response and 55 schools are equipped with first aid kits and the necessary guidelines. |
